Station History
KAZX's roots can be traced back to 1990 when Jeff Thomas petitioned the FCC to assign the 102.9 frequency to Kirtland after another party attempted to drop-in the channel at nearby Durango, Colorado.
By 1992, Thomas had a construction permit in hand to build-out 102.9, but then acquired some other local stations which would have exceeded the permitted ownership limits at the time, and the permit was returned to the FCC.
When applications were again accepted for the frequency, Jeff's family made an application, and once again acquired the permit after settling with another applicant. A few years prior, Thomas had sold most of his other radio interests (KKFG, KTRA, KDAG and KCQL).
Thomas began construction on KAZX in the summer of 1999, and the station went on the air in early November, with group owner AMFM, Inc operating the station via an LMA.
The first real format of the station was an "all Christmas" format that ran from Thanksgiving to Christmas, 1999. After Christmas, KAZX, as "Star 102-9", began a CHR/Top 40 format that exists today. Owner: Clear Channel Communications, Inc.
