Station History

KCQL-AM, Aztec, NM. 1340kHz. Began operations in late July of 1959 as KNDE, licensed to I.E. Shahan. KNDE operated full-time with 250 watts of power.
Apparently, there was also a construction permit for KNDE-FM issued in late 1959, and the FM either went unbuilt or operated for a very short time.
In 1962, KNDE increased its daytime power to 1000 watts. In 1963, the station was sold and became KHAP. Sometime between 1963 and 1965 the station went dark for a brief period.
In 1982, KHAP was sold again and became KKBK "Crackerbarrel Country". In 1985 the station went dark again, returning to the air in 1986 as KCEM "Kick 'em Country" under the ownership of Frank Elwood.
And in 1982, under new ownership, the KCQL call letters were adopted, which remain today. Currently, KCQL presents an all-sports program format and is co-owned/co-located with FM stations KKFG, KTRA, KDAG and KAZX. Owner: Clear Channel Communications, Inc.
