Station History
KDAG-FM, 96.9, Farmington, NM. Began operation as KRAZ-FM in 1969 under the ownership of Boyd Whitney. The station had a variety of music formats before adopting a straight country format. As a country station, KRAZ-FM enjoyed large audience shares for many years.
In 1985, Homer Pirkey acquired the station, along with its companion AM station (KRZE).
In 1992, with new competition, the station was in dire financial straits and went dark.
In 1994, J. Thomas Development, owner of KKFG-FM, purchased the dark KRAZ-FM/KRZE combo and returned them to the air. KRAZ-FM became KDAG, "Big Dog 96.9", Classic Rock. Since 1994, KDAG has enjoyed an almost continuous position as the market leader. In 2009, Big Dog changed its imaging statement to “96-9 The Dog Rocks”
In 1997, the station was sold to Capstar, which merged in 1999 to become AMFM, Inc. In August 2000, Clear Channel Communications, Inc acquired AMFM, Inc. KDAG-FM is co-owned/co-located with FM stations KCQL, KKFG, KTRA, and KAZX. Owner: Clear Channel Communications, Inc.
